Best Placement for a Sectional Sofa

A sectional couch is a perfect gathering spot for a family or group of friends, when you want to relax and enjoy a shared activity or just to stretch out and read a book. As sectionals are such large pieces of furniture, careful planning and measuring is necessary to maximize functionality and appeal.

First, choose a focal point. What is it you wish to gather around? Most common would be a TV, fireplace or view.

Ideally, the couch should be placed in the middle of the room, or area, creating a cosy gathering spot, easily approached from multiple directions, rather than up against the longest wall.

Buddy, loves this couch!

Now, consider flow, it should be easy for people to approach and exit the area.

The most convenient place for a coffee table is in front of the couch, to place drinks and snacks. Another option is to place an ottoman, that provides addition seating and a place for multiple people to put their feet up. For extra functionality, place a large tray on top, for a stable place to place drinks.

Consider the appearance of the room from the entry point. Ideally the open side of the couch, facing the approach to the room, has the most appeal, creating an invitation for people to enter the space. If it is necessary to have the back of the couch facing the approach, use a console table along the back of the couch, with a lamp or small decorative items on it, to soften the barrier like view.

Some sectional couches have a chaise element to them, careful consideration must be taken, to ensure there is sufficient space to move around the space and not box in the approach, before choosing a couch with this option.

Height and color are also important considerations. In a smaller space stay away from overstuffed, bulky pieces in dark colors or bold patterns. Instead use neutral tones but have fun with accent pieces in bold colors or patterns, to show off your personality and bring in other colors in the space, such as drapes, rugs and other pieces of furniture.

For a finishing touch, include soft throws either draped over the end of the couch or in a basket by the side of the focal point, which suggests that this area is a welcoming space your guests or family to gather.
