Under The Kitchen Sink

Requests for an organized kitchen are at the top of most peoples wish lists.  Most of the clients I see, all have one thing in common, they own too many items for the space, leading to cluttered cabinets and over stuffed drawers.

My advice is to reserve under the kitchen sink for cleaning items that relate to the kitchen only. Move general cleaning items out, to make room for your paper towel, a drying rack or drying pad, garbage bags, brushes and sponges, dustpan and brush, dishwashing products and spares, counter spray, clean towels and dishcloths.

If you have small children, avoid dishwasher pods (they are not recommended by dishwasher engineers anyway).

There are a myriad of storage solutions available, from easy reach pull out trays that keep everything in the cupboard corralled, like this solution from The Container Store.

A simple tension rod, to hang spray bottles or baskets on “S” hooks, is an alternative, inexpensive solution.

Never keep flammable products under the sink, where close proximity to a dishwasher is inevitable. The heat generated during a dishwashers wash or dry cycle in the closed space, brings the risk of combustion or fumes. Also never store food products, such as pet foods, in the space, as it may spoil in the warm environment and attract roaches or rodents.
